Valve Release New Patch For Left 4 Dead 2

Valve has updated Left 4 Dead 2 on PC through Steam which is said to fix a whole range of issues with the game, generally improving gameplay experience a fair bit. The developer posted on the official Blog for the game:
“We checked some stats, did some testing, checked more stats, and did more testing. We have many more changes we are working on, some ideas failed, some were exploitable, and some were just bad ideas."

“What we are releasing today is not the sum of our answer to the problem, but simply some of the updates that are ready to ship.”
Groovy, what we like to hear. Full update notes here.

3DS Launch Date Reports Are Just Speculation

Oh dear, apparently Bloomberg's confirmation from Nintendo that the 3DS will launch in Japan this quarter isn't true, or at least Nintendo deny confirming anything of the sort:
“No – we’ve not announced anything to Bloomberg or anyone else."

“It’s just speculation. It might be a case of Chinese whispers, as we have confirmed to Bloomberg there will be an event on the September 29 in Japan where we intend to discuss launch timings, price and shipment details.”
So there.

More Than 3,000 Zombies On Screen Is A Little Much Apparently

Shin Ohara, co-producer on upcoming sequel, Dead Rising 2 has commented that too many zombies on screen can ruin a game. Ohara stated the team tested the game's tech with around 7,000 zombies on screen at one time and felt it ruined the experience:
“Last year at Captivate we did a demo. We had a strip — It was probably like 10 meters wide and 200 meters long. We filled it with about 7,000 zombies. After about 3,000, you can’t really tell the difference because it fills up the screen anyway. Over 3,000, it ruins the experience. It’s not a game anymore."

“We can show about 7,000 zombies if we wanted to, our technology is not limiting us. If the game only shows about 500 zombies or 1,000 zombies, that’s not the game’s limit. We have just enough so that people have fun with the zombies and the gameplay is rewarding."

“We want people to use a lot of weapons, and they need to be able to move around to use it against zombies. Traversing the space shouldn’t be a pain, but it needs to be a challenge as well. We didn’t want to fill a room out of zombies where you had to wiggle your way out."

“Rather, you can jump over them, kick them, or go around them. There are many ways that you can deal with the zombies.”
We definitely want this game. It's out on September 28th in the US and October 1st in the UK. The Xbox Live Arcade exclusive 'Case Zero' DLC is out on August 31st.

First Screenshots Of Kinect Sports

Nintendo must be laughing, and seething at Microsoft and Sony's blatant 'can we have some of the money' attempts. Wii Sports, sorry, Kinect Sports from Rare is an Avatar based title for Kinect which will, naturally feature your digital Avatar playing sports through your control.

You'll be able to take part in six sports such as boxing, bowling, beach volleyball, track and field, soccer and table tennis. First screenshots above. It should be a launch title.

Blackman Resigns From LucasArts

Executive producer and writer on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Haden Blackman has confirmed his resignation from LucasArts following 13 years with the studio:
“I’ve had a fantastic time working with the team at Lucasfilm and am really grateful for their ongoing support. While the decision to leave LucasArts did not happen overnight or come easily, I really feel that now is the best time for me to move on and explore new creative challenges and I look forward to the next phase of my career.”
Blackman's resignation is the latest in several departures from the studio, while LucasArts assures his departure won't effect the development of Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2, which is still down for an October 26th release in the US and October 29th release in the UK for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Games Can't Do Drama Says Prince Of Persia Movie Director

Oh my, director on the Prince of Persia movie, Mike Newell has said that games actually 'bore the arse' off him:
“The Prince Of Persia movie is a great big, general entertainment with a romance, a boy and a girl, comedy, action and a very good melodramatic story. It should be enormous, free reign entertainment. That’s what a Bruckheimer movie is, and that’s what this tries to do."

“But when the discussion turns to the minutiae of the games, it begins now to bore the arse off me, frankly.”

“When people watch 24, they’re watching for the surprise, you know – when is the great big bad surprise going to step out from behind the palm tree."

“When they watch The Wire, they’re watching the human drama of it."

“You can’t do it without the human drama. And the video game cannot do that. The video game can do all sorts of face-pulling, all sorts of: ‘I am a bad man, I have a mean jagged sword,’, but it can’t do any more than that.”
Form an orderly queue to commence bitch slapping.

Pan’s Labyrinth Director Working On A Game?

Mexican director Guillermo Del Toro has in the past expressed his desire to work in the field of videogames. In an interview with MTV News, the director of Hellboy, Blade 2 and Oscar-winning critical darling Pan’s Labyrinth said:
"One of the things we're announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company. We're going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting. It's not a development deal. We're going to do it. We're doing them. And we're going to announce it soon enough."
Del Toro certainly has a distinct and unique visual style, and has created some marvellously twisted adult fables. If this claim turns out to be founded, it will be very interesting to see what he is working on.

3DS Launch Date & Pricing Confirmation In September

Nintendo has confirmed to Bloomberg Japan that they will reveal the pricing and release date of hugely anticipated 3D handheld the 3DS on September 29th.

Ever since the reveal at this year’s E3, rumours have been rife with regard to its release and pricing, but Nintendo has said very little aside from that it will be available in 2011 and they intend to launch it at a profit from day one.

Nintendo’s Sales Continue To Diminish

Nintendo has shown big drops in sales figures for the financial quarter ending June 30th 2010.

Sales were down from 253.5 billion yen in the 2009 to 188.6 billion this year; a drop of just over 25 percent.

Wii hardware sales were up 36.6 percent however, with 3.04 million sales compared to 2.23 million in the first quarter of 2009.

On the other hand, DS hardware sold 3.15 million units, down 44.7 percent from their 5.7 million sales in the same period last year.

The strong Yen is largely to blame for their lower income, although the slowing sales of DS hardware is likely to be contributory. Nonetheless, with the 3DS poised to launch this year or next (?) it won’t be long before their profits spike again, we suspect.

Capcom Profits Slide 90%

Capcom’s profits for the financial quarter ending June 30th have shown a huge 90 percent drop for the Japanese publisher. Profits stood at 213 million yen, down from 2.2 billion yen in the same period last year.

The company blamed the high value of the yen, as well as slow sales of Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii and the stagnating US and European markets.

Big releases from the publisher this year include Lost Planet 2 for PS3/360 and Ghost Trick for the DS, both of which have sold below expectation. Super Street Fighter IV was also released, which is said to have shown steady growth for the publisher.

It is worth bearing in mind though that Resident Evil 5 came out in early 2009 and sold over five million copies and was a huge success for Capcom, as well as Street Fighter IV selling a over two million copies and the continued Japanese success of Monster Hunter on the PSP, which has since died down somewhat.

We dare say this would be a great opportunity to port Monster Hunter Tri over to the PS3 and 360, where it would surely meet with success.

SOCOM: Special Forces Delayed

Zipper Interactive have announced through the SOCOM website that latest iteration SOCOM: Special Forces (aka SOCOM 4) has been delayed until an unspecified date in 2011. In a statement senior community manager Jeremy Dunham said:
“While we’re certainly aware that you’ve been looking forward to playing SOCOM 4 this year, we don’t want to take any shortcuts. Instead, we want to deliver the best and most immersive SOCOM game we possibly can and we’re going to use our extra time to do just that.”
This could, however come as a blow to the launch of Sony’s Move hardware. SOCOM 4 was due to be one of the big launch window titles, and a title sure to interest core gamers in juxtaposition to all of the mini-game compilations such as Sports Champions or Start the Party. Whether this will impact Move’s initial uptake remains to be seen.

No reason was given for the delay, although it’s likely SOCOM 4 has moved to avoid similarly-themed military shooters such as Call of Duty: Black Ops and Medal of Honor. Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldiers has been delayed until 2011 for that very reason.

Sony Post Impressive PlayStation Profits

Sony has posted financial results for the quarter ending June 30th 2010, showing an increase in sales of 32.4 percent.

PS3 sales in the period came in at 2.4 million, up an impressive 118 percent from 1.1 million units from the same period in 2009. Worldwide sales now stand at 38.1 million. PS3 software sales hit 24.8 million, which is a year-on-year increase of 68 percent.

PSP hardware sales were almost static, shifting 1.2 million units compared to 1.3 million in the same period 2009. Global sales now stand at 48.6 million, meaning the console should breach 50 million sales by the end of the year. Meanwhile, PSP2 rumours persist, although nothing has even been shown or confirmed by Sony. PSP software sales saw a slight increase, coming in at 9.2 million against last year’s 8.3 million.

Meanwhile the ol’ PS2 continues to chug along, with 1.2 million sales in the quarter, which was the same as last year. Software sales were down by some 60 percent to 3.4 million units.

In summary, Sony’s Network Product and Services Division posted a sales increase of 32.4 percent to 325 billion yen, with a profit of 32.9 billion yen. This will be great news for them considering the same period in 2009 a loss of 36.7 billion yen was incurred.
