50% Off All Quake Games On Steam

The popular games download client Steam has knocked a lovely 50% of its Quake collection.

This means you can get the full Quake collection for £8.49 (down from £16.99) or if you prefer, you can buy titles individually.

The collection in case you’re wondering consists of:

Quake, Quake II, Quake II Mission Pack: Ground Zero, Quake II Mission Pack: The Reckoning, Quake III Arena, Quake III: Team Arena, Quake Mission Pack 1: Scourge Of Armagon and Quake Mission Pack 2: Dissolution Of Eternity.

Not bad for £8.49 huh? Wonder if Mark's finished his screenplay for the movie adaptation of Quake II...

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker Delayed

Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker

Konami has confirmed that the UK release of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on PSP will not be arriving until June 18th, almost a month later than announced.

Hopefully the irony isn’t lost given that a little while ago Hideo Kojima actually said:
"I always preach to the staff, 'You must not have a delay after a release date has been announced. There is no greater crime as a game developer'."
Whilst we’re pretty sure there are worse crimes out there, it’s no less frustrating.

Fallout 3 Developer Praises PC Gaming

A chief developer behind Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has expressed his support or fondness for PC gaming.

PC gaming has been in decline for a while now and publishers implementing these controversial DRM systems is putting even more gamers off the platform.

Ashley Cheng, production director at Bethesda Game Studios however is rooting for PC gaming, as he expressed on his Blog:
"I don't play games on PC much…"

"I mostly game on my Xbox 360, occasionally on PS3, and some iPhone, too. Every now and then, you'll see an email thread about how PC games is doomed, dying, dead, obsolete, etc... Predicting the death of PC gaming is like bell bottoms. Every few years, it becomes fashionable to cry that PC gaming is over."

"I don't think PC gaming is ever going to go away. Tastes change. Trends come and go. Thanks to services like Steam and Good Old Games, what a great time to be a PC gamer! Imagine the greatest games ever created, all at your fingertips, and cheap, too. It’s like being a film buff and having Netflix stream every Oscar winning film - no waiting, just pick the one you want to watch."
Jon Peddie Research, the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, predicted last November that the PC gaming hardware market will see a 30% increase in 2010. This increase equates to a $6 billion (£4 billion) increase from 2009.

Sega Performing Well In The PC Games Market

Sega has commented on the PC games market, claiming it's not as drab as what people make it out to be. SEGA UK’s managing director John Clark commented:
“The PC market is third in terms of its year-on-year performance with a decline of 26 per cent, but this doesn’t really reflect the full picture. The PC digital download business is now a viable sector but somewhat invisible as it’s not yet covered by Chart-Track. The PC market overall is actually performing much better than is currently reported and remains a vital and strong sector to be involved in."

“Last month’s PC chart illustrates Sega’s position within this sector. Napoleon: Total War, Football Manager 2010 and Aliens vs Predator are three different styles of game from three different genres. They can all drive a strong, community fan base with the ability to consistently deliver endless hours of gameplay. Incidentally, they are all developed in the UK."

“For 2009, Sega was ranked the second biggest PC publisher in the market. In 2010 year-to-date, we are once again ranked second. Long may it continue.”

Getting CryEngine 3 On Consoles Was Hard Work

Crytek has revealed that making the CryEngine 3 work on consoles, was hard work, which is quite understandable given the technical specs of the original Crysis title. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli commented:
“Crytek has been offering the CryENGINE for many years now, more than 10 to be accurate. The decision to enter the console market for engines was first driven by our desire to make console games."

“That’s what we always wanted to do. The big challenge during the development of CryENGINE3 has been scaling the engine whilst maintaining the visual quality and performance."

“This is always challenging; problems occurred of course, but we’re really proud that our teams have managed to solve them as we proved in line with several engine presentations and will prove [this] with Crysis 2."

“I think for console gamers especially the freedom of Crysis 2 gameplay is very interesting. Crysis gameplay is not about “go anywhere”, it is about looking at a situation from a great vantage point and then formulating a plan which you pro-actively initiate and defeat your foes."

“You have a lot of freedom in what that plan entails and what weapons and world interactions you use. This is what we call Veni Vidi Vici gameplay: I came, I saw, I conquered and it should be quite fresh to the console market."

“For PC gamers, I think, Crysis 2 is more fun, looks amazing, and runs well on all platforms, and no one will feel cheated by their respective experience”.
Stay tuned for this one, it'll be awesome, but it's not expected to arrive until Q3 2011.

Now, BioWare has officially ruled out this possibility stating that they are working for a Windows only release… for now. Community Manager Sean Dahlberg said:
“Star Wars: The Old Republic is currently being developed for the PC. While we recognise that there are other operating systems and platforms available for games today, our development is specific to the personal computer using the Windows operating system at this time.”

Dead Space 2 Will Be A Horror... But With A Little Extra Spice

In PAX east, Executive producer Steve Papoutsis, producer Rich Briggs and art director Ian Milham, splashed some new info in an interview on the expected sequel to Dead Space. When asked about previous info that it was going to be more action oriented they said:
"Listening to what gamers think about the game, one thing that we heard over and over again was "hey, we love the horror elements of Dead Space, those were great, but we also want a release point," a point where you can feel like a bad-ass and kick a little bit of ass. I think the way that Rich has been explaining it and we've all been explaining it, if you think about a rollercoaster ride or a sine wave, there's going to be moments where we're building the tension, we're building to a moment and there's a climax and then there's a release, where you can get your bearings, kick ass a little bit and then it's right back into the tension. We're sprinkling these moments throughout the game that are going to make the player feel very empowered -- [they're] epic.”
The first Dead Space was an over the top horror game that kept players on edge continuously, Dead Space 2 will feature a more experienced Isaac Clarke that will be capable of much more this time around:
“You can have a high-octane moment that's also very, very scary. We're looking at a lot of different, sophisticated ways to bring both the action, the terror, and the horror together.”
