Speaking at GamesCom this week, the boss of Polyphony Digital and creator of the Gran Turismo series Kazunori Yamauchi explained that karts nearly didn't make it into the upcoming instalment of the franchise, due for release this November:

“We were saving this for GT6, but the information leaked out so we decided we would just put it in this one.”He also discussed the game's 3D Photo Mode and the Course Maker Mode which will be included in Gran Turismo 5.
