Korean Game Market Could Exceed $2 Billion USD By 2011

Due to rapid expansion into overseas markets, the South Korean online game market could exceed $2b USD by 2011, according to a study by Pearl Research. MapleStory, Dungeon Fighter Online and Soul of the Ultimate Nation saw revenues jump 50% or higher in 2009, and for the two former games, non-Korean income exceeded domestic income for the first time.

The South Korean MMO market is bustling, as Western developers are also putting MMOs in that market that aren't being seen in America and the EU, even for bigger names like FIFA. Furthermore, it should be noted that both MapleStory and Dungeon Fighter Online are both free-of-charge games that emphasize microtransactions, a market that is making is being seen more in the West on Facebook. As time passes, we should see more developers - both Eastern and Western - take a stab at this system.
