In what can only be called a success for the publisher, Activison's Call of Duty franchise has sold it's 20 millionth map pack for the Call of Duty franchise. This includes paid DLC for Call of Duty 3, both Modern Warfare games, and World at War:
"The milestone is significant, particularly because downloadable content like extra maps have higher profit margins than retail boxed games, which have significant per-unit materials and distribution costs."
Despite the controversy surrounding the $15 map packs for Modern Warfare 2, the market has reacted strongly, and it looks like they're here to stay. As for my thoughts, Devil Coldewey of Crunchgear says it best:
"Congratulations all around, I guess, as they have clearly put out a highly successful (and very fun) product, but I still feel like DLC being co-developed with a game is kind of like robbing the gamer before he’s even paid his money."
