In a recent review, Nintendo overlord Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was due for release a lot earlier than the June 2010 date the game is set for in the UK.
A translation of a recent 'Iwata Asks' session (the current head of Nintendo) has Miyamoto admitting that the game was going to be more of a levels update to the original Super Mario Galaxy and could have had a much earlier release as a result but the developers figured out things they could do in a fully-fledged sequel rather than a mere update to the first game.
Still, from reviews that are appearing for the upcoming it appears that perfection is not too far away when the game is released next month. Whether released in 2008 or now I'm sure the game will be just as good either way.
