Modern Warfare 2 Achieves Guinness World Record

The famed first-person shooter has achieved an entry into the Guinness book of World Records with holding the most successful entertainment launch of all time and first day sales of more than £242.4m. This breaks the previous record formerly held by Grand Theft Auto IV by a staggering £84m. Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition editor Gaz Deaves had this to add on the matter:
"Videogame releases such as the Call of Duty series have outperformed the launches of major Hollywood blockbusters for several years and the day-one sales for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 proved once again that video games have become cultural events in their own right"

"The fan movement and hype surrounding this game in the run-up to launch was almost unprecedented in scale; we acknowledged early on that the big question wasn't if it would break all-time entertainment records, but rather by how much."
Not suprising given the franchise’s popularity but interesting to see some hard facts and figures on the game’s sales there. Not quite Hollywood blockbuster-style earnings but I’m sure over time the gap will narrow between the games industry’s biggest titles and Hollywood films. I bet within 10 years we’ll see them match each other for earnings (maybe).

Many may debate whether Modern Warfare 2 deserved the hype or praise it received, but one thing is certain: Activision know how to sell a game for everything it’s worth. All their hardships have paid off. Congratulations!
