Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward has asserted that the Care Package glitch in Modern Warfare 2 which allowed players to call in unlimited drops, turning maps into a cluster fuck of explosive ordinance and heavy gunning, had no effect on the games popularity.
The bug was patched in February.
In an interview with CVG, Bowling was asked if the problem damaged Modern Warfare 2's popularity and asked to consider the likes of rival titles such as Battlefield: Bad Company 2:

"No, there was no drop [in players]. Since people take this game very seriously and they play so hardcore - we do as well - you know that stuff gets a lot of attention."The Stimulus Package for Modern Warfare 2 was released last week but again, this release wasn’t without its problems. All is well again though.
"But in the grand scheme of things, I mean we have 25 million unique players and of the people who experienced those types of things and even participate in those types of things are very very small - like one per cent of our user base. So in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really impact the overall experience of the majority of players."
