Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light Will Only Release Digitally

Trade magazine MVC reports that the next release in the Tomb Raider franchise will be a digital-only release, and that the Tomb Raider part of the name has actually been removed from the title). General manager of Crystal Dynamics, Darrell Gallagher, commented:
“This is a really exciting project for Crystal Dynamics, we have created something completely new and very different to what people might be expecting."

“Lara Croft is such an iconic character in videogames, with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light we have created what we believe is a truly original digital experience.”
The game is due to be released this year.

Thanks Patrick. This will either completely destroy the Lara Croft brand/franchise or give it the reboot it so badly needed.

It's shedding the ageing Tomb Raider tag, of which recent titles didn't live up to the reputation. However, unless the new and independent Lara Croft title can raise its head above the likes of Uncharted, it'll die a death and become the end of Lara Croft.

Time will tell. Lets hope they don't use the same game mechanics of recent Tomb Raider titles, but have her in luscious open world environments and more Uncharted-like...

Tomb Raider set the standard. Uncharted copied and raised the bar. Now Lara Croft has to reach the new bar and exceed it.

Wonder where that'll come from...
