Bad news for fans of retro games; Microsoft has taken down all Midway published games from its Xbox Live Arcade service.
Midway was the most prolific publisher selling games on Xbox Live Arcade, with arcade classics such as Gauntlet, Smash TV, and Joust being available for purchase. However these games are not to stay, along with Cyberball 2072, Robotron: 2084, Defender, Paperboy, Rootbeer Tapper, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Microsoft stated that the games were removed due to "evolving rights and permissions."
However gamers are scrutinizing the decision, with some claiming that Microsoft is removing them to pave the way for its Game Room service that is being released this year. These suspicions are only magnified by the fact that Midway games still remain on the Playstation 3 downloadable store front for purchase. Microsoft has assured gamers that if they purchased any of the Midway-published titles before they were removed, they may continue to play and re-download their purchase.
