GameStop Sees 2009 As Second Best Year Yet

US games retailer GameStop, has reported that sales for 2009 were the second highest ever and would have most likely beaten 2008's record year of sales if it wasn't for shortages and economic conditions. CEO Daniel DeMatteo commented:
“Despite a kick start to this year’s holiday selling season with several major title launches, sales momentum was impacted in December by economic weakness in all global operating segments, winter storms at peak shopping periods in December, and unexpected shortages of key products such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nintendo Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3 consoles."
Hardware sales saw a decline of 8% which the retailer pinned on price drops and the normal decline in console sales. Software however, was pleasantly up by 4% with strong sales from titles including Modern Warfare 2, Assassin’s Creed II, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Left 4 Dead 2, and Dragon Age: Origins holding top five positions during the nine-week Holiday period.

In 2008, holiday sales for the retailer were up 22% at $2.9 billion, with year-on-year sales in 2009 rounded up to $2.86 billion.
