Sony Expected More Negative Retailers On PSPgo

Sony PSP Go Sony PSP Go Sony PSP Go

PSP UK product manager Claire Backhouse has commented on specific retailers refusing to stock the PSPgo and revealed Sony expected more negative reactions from retailers, and got less than expected:
“We were very aware of concerns when we went into it and I actually expected a lot more negative responses than we actually got."

“They were really quite fine with it. They see it as a way of getting people into the store because it’s new interest, a new product. And they’ve had such strong sales as well of PSP 3000 almost off the back of it.”
Launching a product and expecting a lot of people to hate it, good move. It launches tomorrow. EA Australia aren't stocking it, and neither is Dutch retailer, Nedgame.

OnLive May Not Arrive In 2009

“Over the last decade, we’ve seen an enormous upheaval in the media business as the written word, photos, music, and video have been steadily moving away from physical media to online delivery."

“One major category that still remains largely based on physical discs is fast-response interactive media — in particular, video games. And, of course, OnLive’s goal is to enable that last remaining transition.”
OnLive was always down to arrive in 2009 and most likely in Winter.

It's quite marvellously baffling.

Peter Molyneux Hates Game Demos

Peter Molyneux has expressed his distaste at demos for games believing them to be the “the death knell of experiences” and would prefer the first part of games to be made available for free rather than a demo:
“I hate demos. I think demos are the death knell of experiences. Over the years I’ve done demos and they’ve either completely ruined the game, given too much to the player, or they’ve confused people, so I said that we should give away the very first 45 minutes of the game, completely free.”

UK Has The Most Online And Console Gamers In Europe

Unsurprisingly, the UK has the most online and console gamers in Europe according to the 2009 UK National Gamers Survey. 73% of those questioned regularly play games, with many ranking gaming as their favourite pastime, ahead of surfing the internet and watching TV.

Young men between the ages of 13 and 19 spend on average 11 hours per week playing games, and boys as young as eight admit to gaming seven and a half hours a week. The findings from TNS and Gamesindustry.com demonstrate that gaming could soon start to replace the internet and TV as the country’s favourite pastime, and has already overtaken reading newspapers and magazines. Even the historically smaller gaming segments are getting in on the act: 86% of girls play games and an astonishing 42% of people over the age of 50 say that they spend more time gaming than reading magazines.

Despite the downturn hitting Britain harder than many of its European neighbours, Brits are also the most likely to pay for games. While 10% of gamers in the Netherlands admit to regularly making illegal copies of popular console games, only 4% of Brits do the same.

The study also reveals that mobile phones and social networks such as MySpace and Facebook are the game platforms of the future, although they are yet to properly take hold in the UK, where only 11% of the gamers on social networks indicate that these are their primary gaming destinations– less than half that of the US. In the UK, the introduction of the iPhone and other smartphones pushed the mobile telephone as a gaming platform up to 20% in the last year, double the level achieved in other European countries.
