Atari Announces Cancellation Of Several Projects

Atari have announced in a statement that they will be cancelling several projects "which do not meet higher return on investment criteria and require significant working capital investments.” This is hardly surprising considering recent revelations of Infogrames' losses of €226.1 during the fiscal year of 2009.

Considering the previous year's net loss of €51.1 million, the company looks to "improve the cash position" of its business and to focus on "more cost-effective" mass-market and online games.

At present, there is no confirmation of which projects are to be axed.

Phil Harrison No Longer President Of Atari

It has been reported yesterday that Phil Harrison is no longer serving as the President of Atari, a role he has only held since 3 March 2008. The former Executive Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is no longer filling the role of Directeur Général Délégué for Infogrames/Atari.

During Atari's annual fiscal report, they stated:
"Because of a shift of business operations to the US, Phil Harrison will move from the role of President to that of non-executive Director of the Group. As all Board members, he will continue to assist, support and guide the Company's strategy."
Sounds like a demotion to us...

Yoichi Wada: "Industry Ready For Second Stage Of Growth"

President of Square Enix, Yoichi Wada, has recently declared how he thinks that the videogames industry is about to enter into a new period of growth. Since the industry has now established itself as a mainstream form of entertainment, he disputes the idea that demand for games has levelled off:
“Some people say that demand for games has levelled off. In some respects this is true, but in others it is not. Until now, the history of the game industry has mainly been about broadening horizons, meaning developing territory and increasing customer base. I think some people say it's levelled off because they believe this growth has almost reached its limit.”

“However, we believe this is in fact the foundation for the second stage of growth, and that it proves that games have become established worldwide as another genre of entertainment. From now on, it will grow further as an established mainstream entertainment, and there will be further convergence of media and entertainment.”
