New And Improved BBC iPlayer For The Wii

The BBC have collaborated with Nintendo to provide a new and more compatible version of the iPlayer for the Wii. Whilst the previous version for the Wii was denoted as “clumsy”, the BBC have worked with Nintendo to adapt the player to the already family orientated Wii.

Given the popularity of the Wii as a family entertainment medium we will likely see a greater rise in the number of people accessing iPlayer via their gaming console. Previously the PlayStation 3 had overtaken the Mac for iPlayer viewing (10% vs 8.5% in September) but that number has declined to around 6% now for the PS3.

Should iPlayer continue its symbiotic relationship with consoles they could possibly become the medium of choice for viewing BBC iPlayer given the more simple set up. That is of course, until PC – TV connection is made easier (hello Windows 7).

The iPlayer for the Wii will be available on the 18th of November 2009. Users are promised a good range of programmes.
