Unsurprisingly, whilst enjoying massive praise and incredible revenue Modern Warfare 2 has been met with harsh criticism and condemnation. The Guardian reports that Russia has even went so far as to recall copies of the game from shelves purportedly because of its unfavourable depiction of Russia (this is still to be confirmed).
Additionally it has been met with rebuttal by religious leaders; Fazan Mohammed on the news site MCV dismissed the idea that games of this nature are simply entertainment but rather involve “a much more intimate experience.” And that “You're mentally playing out the effects of violence.” He goes further to acknowledge Joseph Goebbels assertion that his “entertainment” was a huge crux for Germans’ hostile psyche toward other nations. This of course neglects the completely different agendas behind the different entertainment pieces.
Additionally it has been met with hostility on a gender level with Hannah Betts (Telegraph) rather “sexist and outdated” comments about men being sucked in too deeply with the game.
There were however much more receptive reports on the game from publications such as The Observer and The Times. Also many important notes have been made about more direct influences or simply other media which shows more evidence or at least correlation between reception of and acting out acts experienced in media.
