Microsoft Patents New Invite System

The new invite system patented by Microsoft could be used for “viral” gaming such as that used by Facebook applications (e.g. Mafia Wars)

The patent filed by Gary Hall, Director of Platform Development at Microsoft Xbox Division and Joshua Howard, previous studio head at Microsoft’s Carbonated Games suggests a definite next step in viral gaming

The plans are based around the current invite system where a player will invite a friend who then invites their friends and so on. However the proposals are that there will be the option for sub-games for invitees. These mini diversions will consist of games like a travelling journal which is passed from user to user and will be a recorded journey as entries are written.

Another game will be a take on the ‘guess who’ idea where players will submit facts about themselves and one player’s facts will be published leaving the other players to discover who fits the criteria (either the initial person or someone else on other friend lists). The patent is further insight into Microsoft’s plans for Xbox Live after previously detailing a new user-created help system. Whether or not these patents or proposals will come to light have yet to be determined.
